Barak Valley Reels Under Severe Water Crisis as Five-Month Dry Spell Continues

While isolated pre-monsoon hailstorms bring relief to other districts, residents in Lala and Hailakandi are forced to block highways and collect contaminated water from broken street hydrants.

A punishing five-month dry spell has triggered an acute water crisis across the Barak Valley, leaving desperate residents to rely on contaminated sources and sparking public protests. Even as pre-monsoon hailstorms bring much-needed relief to other parts of the state, the valley remains entirely parched, with severe dust storms disrupting daily life and local ponds and reservoirs running completely dry.

The situation has reached a critical tipping point in Lala town. Although the local municipality has deployed water tanks, the supply is falling drastically short of demand and failing to reach several neighborhoods entirely. On the town’s PK Road, a grim daily struggle unfolds where local women are forced to scoop dirty, contaminated water into mugs and household vessels from broken street hydrants. These Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department pipelines have reportedly languished in a state of disrepair for years. Residents stated that while they store this murky water for basic daily chores, they are left with no choice but to purchase their drinking water directly from the market.

The crisis extends deep into the rural belts, where the desperation for water has boiled over into public unrest. In the Sultani area of South Hailakandi, the local water supply has been completely suspended for the past month and a half simply due to unpaid electricity dues. Driven to the brink, suffering residents recently staged a blockade on the national highway to demand the immediate restoration of their vital water supply.

The grim reality in the Barak Valley stands in stark contrast to recent weather developments elsewhere. Following warnings from the meteorological center, pre-monsoon storms and hail have finally begun to break the state’s grueling five-month drought in certain regions. While the sudden hailstorms triggered temporary panic in the affected zones, they have largely breathed new life into the region’s parched nature and trees. However, these revitalizing showers have been highly localized; so far, reports of hailstorms have been isolated entirely to the West Karbi Anglong district along the Meghalaya border, leaving the Barak Valley waiting endlessly for relief.
