Lala Rural College Seminar Highlights Role of AI in Financial Independence and Auditing

Experts urge students to adapt to digital transformation in the commerce sector during a one-day interactive session.

In a bid to bridge the gap between academic theory and the rapidly evolving demands of the financial sector, the Department of Commerce at Lala Rural College organized a one-day interactive session this past Friday. The event, held at the college’s Adi Shankar Seminar Hall, was titled “Financial Independence through Awareness and Smart Investment and the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Accounting and Auditing.”

The technical session was helmed by the resource person, Dr. Gaur Gopal Banik, Professor and Dean of the School of Management and Commerce at Girijananda Chowdhury University, Guwahati. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Banik provided a comprehensive overview of financial independence, advocating for early disciplined financial habits, systematic savings, and astute risk management. He outlined various avenues for smart investment, urging students to engage in long-term financial planning.

Pivoting to the technological landscape, Dr. Banik underscored the disruptive and transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence within the industry. He detailed how AI-driven tools are revolutionizing core functions such as fraud detection, data processing, financial analysis, and audit methodologies. He cautioned that for future accountants and auditors to remain relevant in a competitive professional landscape, they must continuously upgrade their skills and adapt to these digital innovations.

Earlier in the day, the programme was formally inaugurated by the College Principal, Dr. Himabrata Chakraborty, with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. In his welcome address, Dr. Chakraborty commended the Department of Commerce for the initiative, emphasizing the critical need for academic programmes that connect theoretical classroom knowledge with practical, real-world applications. Following the inauguration, the resource person was felicitated with a traditional uttariya.

The Head of the Commerce Department also addressed the students, stressing the growing imperative of financial literacy and the necessity of integrating technological advancements like AI into the standard commerce curriculum. Echoing these sentiments, IQAC Coordinator Dr. Ng. Dayamay Singh encouraged the student body to actively engage with contemporary financial concepts. He noted that understanding AI tools is no longer optional but essential for shaping responsible citizens and enhancing professional competency.

Faculty member Deepika Singh also spoke on the occasion, touching upon significant aspects of balancing student life with professional aspirations. The event was anchored by fourth-semester student Mriganka Acharya.

The seminar concluded with a vibrant Q&A round, where students sought clarity on investment strategies, career prospects in accounting, and the impact of technological advancements. The programme ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Deepmala Paul, who expressed gratitude to the Principal, the IQAC Coordinator, faculty members, and the resource person for the successful execution of the event, followed by the rendition of the National Anthem.
