The festive cheer of approaching Eid is being dampened in Lala town as citizens grapple with paralyzing daily traffic jams. The town’s infrastructure is currently crumbling under the combined pressure of a massive influx of festive shoppers and persistent logistical bottlenecks, turning everyday travel into a harrowing experience.
A major contributor to the daily gridlock is the town’s railway crossing at Chowrangi. With four to five trains cutting through the heart of Lala daily, the railway gates are frequently closed, triggering long, stagnant queues of vehicles on both sides of the tracks. Commuters have expressed deep frustration over this recurring delay, which has become an unavoidable part of their daily routine.
Compounding the misery is the chaotic and unregulated movement of commercial vehicles. Drivers of both large and small transport vehicles are routinely seen halting indiscriminately on busy roads to pick up and drop off passengers, entirely ignoring traffic norms.
The situation is further exacerbated by local shopkeepers openly flouting civic regulations. Despite clear directives from the Lala Municipality banning the loading and unloading of goods from lorries during daytime hours, trucks remain a common sight parked directly in front of shops. This blatant disregard for the rules severely chokes the town’s major thoroughfares. Areas like College Road, situated near the bustling Mangalbari market, have become notorious choke points where citizens are frequently left stranded in massive jams.
While plainclothes police personnel have been deployed to manage the situation, law enforcement appears overwhelmed by the sheer volume of traffic. Meanwhile, the local markets are teeming with Eid shoppers, with a notably high turnout of women. Unfortunately, for the residents of Lala, the excitement of the festive season is currently overshadowed by the daily struggle to navigate their own town.
