Pre-Poll Rains Expose Civic Apathy: Dilapidated Lala-Gaglacherra Stretch and Waterlogged SP Road Leave Residents Fuming

Citizens demand urgent intervention from DC and local MP as massive potholes and chronic flooding turn daily commutes into a nightmare.

Just ahead of the upcoming elections, sudden Chaitra showers have laid bare the catastrophic condition of civic infrastructure in Lala. A crucial four-kilometer stretch of the Lala-Gaglacherra road, falling under the Hailakandi PWD division, has practically transformed into a death trap, while chronic waterlogging continues to plague the town’s SP Road.

Following two days of persistent rain, major intersections including Chengabil, Madaripar, Gaglacherra, and Umednagar have been reduced to impassable, muddy swamps. For years, the vital PWD thoroughfare connecting the Umednagar tri-junction to the Gaglacherra bridge has suffered from severe administrative neglect. Today, the blacktopping is entirely washed away in several sections and replaced by pond-sized craters, making both walking and driving a daily ordeal.

These hazardous conditions have made traffic accidents a routine occurrence. Commuters and drivers navigating auto-rickshaws, Magic vans, Sumos, and Travelers face immense hardships simply trying to enter or exit Lala town. Locals argue that the sheer density of massive potholes makes it difficult to tell if the road has craters, or if it is merely a collection of craters masquerading as a road.

Frustrated by the perennial indifference of the state PWD, local victims are pointing out the stark contradiction between their daily reality and the “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” slogan championed by the central and state BJP governments, which heavily emphasizes connectivity. With the town’s main entry point serving as a glaring symbol of a collapsed communication network, Gaglacherra residents have issued an urgent appeal. They are demanding immediate intervention from District Commissioner Abhijit Jain and Member of Parliament Kripanath Mallah to expedite critical restoration work.

The infrastructural misery, however, is not limited to the outskirts. Within Lala town itself, residents commuting via SP Road have endured severe, long-standing waterlogging issues. Citizens allege that despite years of immense public suffering, the Lala Municipality has completely failed to implement any meaningful measures to resolve the chronic urban flooding crisis.
