Following a crucial late-night meeting, the heavyweight independent candidate stepped down to back official nominee Zubair Anam, smoothing the party’s path ahead of the elections.

In what is being described as a major political masterstroke for the Congress party, heavyweight rebel leader Manna Khan Chowdhury officially withdrew his independent nomination on Thursday. The decision to step aside and back the party’s official candidate, Zubair Anam, was cemented during a high-stakes, closed-door meeting held late Wednesday night at Khan’s residence in Katlicherra.
The midnight negotiations saw the attendance of top party brass, including District Congress President Anam Uddin Laskar and the candidate, Zubair Anam, alongside Khan’s supporters. The presence of District Congress Vice-President Sahab Uddin Chowdhury, Zilla Parishad member representative Kabir Uddin Laskar, and Abdul Muktadir Chowdhury—husband of the Lala Anchalik Panchayat President—added significant weight to the compromise. With the internal rebellion successfully quelled, reports indicate that the party has already initiated the process of revoking its pending disciplinary actions against Khan.
The crisis initially erupted when Congress awarded the electoral ticket to Anam over Khan, who had staked a strong claim for the seat. Anam’s candidacy originally faced severe backlash from local residents. Despite his roots in Algapur, voters viewed him as disconnected, pointing out that he was born and raised in Guwahati. However, public sentiment began to shift favorably once Anam actively arrived on the ground in Algapur. Meanwhile, a disgruntled Khan had broken party discipline and begun rigorous preparations to contest as an independent, leaving the District Congress in an embarrassing position where they hesitated to take immediate action against him.
Khan’s formidable reputation stems from a history of successful anti-party defiance. During the last Panchayat elections, he was denied a party ticket for a reserved Zilla Parishad seat, which he had demanded for his wife, Fatema Begum Chowdhury. In retaliation, he fielded her as an independent candidate and secured a victory, leading to his temporary expulsion from Congress. However, when the party needed numbers to form the Zilla Parishad, Khan emerged as the decisive trump card. Congress was forced to broker a deal, reinstating him and appointing his wife as the Zilla Parishad Chairperson.
By choosing to align with the party this time, the self-proclaimed dedicated Congress worker has spared the leadership another major electoral headache. Political analysts note that this newly forged unity breathes fresh life into grassroots workers and significantly alters the voting equations, smoothing Congress’s path to victory in the Algapur-Katlicherra constituency.
